dc.description.abstract1974 has been a year of unease, of looking apprehensively towards the future, in which the international community.', Canada, and CUSO alike have searched for a focused. In March, Robert Heilbroner published "An Enquiry into the Human Prospect", concluding that only through a supreme, sustained effort can society survive. In May, 280 Canadians from forty organizations took part in a National Conference for World Population Year Three months later, 5,000 people from 136 countries participated in the World Population Conference and Tribune at Bucharest,, It was the largest and most serious attempt yet to seek agreement on a World Plan of Action to curb population growth«, Two CUSO staff members, Margaret Hilson and Joyce Relyea, attended. The Bucharest meeting produced some highly significant recommendations (see appendix: report by Margaret Hilson)c And they heralded, both by the content of their proposals ("Need of a global system for a fair distribution of food products"), and by the urgency of their warnings ("The world situation is potentially disastrous"), the World Food Conference to be held in Rome in November. Nor are these conclusions being shared by the more vociferous NGO groups alone0 They are echoed by Canadian Members of Parliament of all political parties, such as Douglas Roche, Progressive Conservative M.P.
