dc.description.abstract | Water is an indispensable natural resource for survival of human beings but in Tanzania over 25% of the water supply schemes are not functioning properly. Due to these Tanzania adapted water projects such as HESAWA, LVWATSAN and LVEMP in Lake Zone region to solve the problems of water shortage and sanitation. However, most of water projects in the country have been unsuccessful and this could be due to low participation of community members in the projects. The study aimed at assessing Community Participation in the Management of Water Projects. Specifically, the study evaluated community participation in every stage of the projects, assessed the sustainability of water projects and identified challenges facing actors in community participation in the management of project. The study was conducted in Simuyu region, 120 respondents were interviewed. Descriptive analysis were employed to assess community participation in the project. The study found that 73% of the community participated in initial stages, 55% in preparation stage, 43% in appraisal stage and 70% participated in the implementation stage of the project. Moreover, the project was found to be sustainable because 70% of the respondent contributed labour, 3% contributed cash and 13% of the respondent contributed both cash and labour. The main challenges in project participation were lack of transparence, lack of willingness and poor understanding of the community. The study recommends the Link between stakeholders, mobilization, exercise ownership, frequent supervision and education. | en_US |
