This short paper outlines some of background problems of land use planning in east Africa and perhaps suggest some ways in which implementation of plans is possible. A certain amount of selection of land for agriculture has already taken place in east Africa for there has been natural movement of people towards areas of high fertility and good rainfall. Land as such is not short in east Africa yet, but good land is in short supply, and conflict will undoubtedly grow. The urban planner is formulating their plans to reach out to the year 2000 and perhaps we should be looking as far as that for our overall land use plans.en_US
