Item The role of mass media in the promotion of good governance: a case of press media in Tanzania.(University of Dar es Salaam, 2001) Mkisi, Martin E.The Tanzanian agenda for development in this 21st century has been among other things the promotion of good governance. This study is about pressmedia and good governance in Tanzania. The study was conducted in Dar es Salaam and the field research was carried out between July 2000 and January 2001. The study findings and analysis eventually revealed that the pressmedia (particularly the private newspapers) have had a recommendable and encouraging contribution in the promotion of good governance in Tanzania. The study paid particular attention to some attributes of good governance namely: public accountability, responsibility and openness; anti-corruption and media's role in building an informed citizenry which can hold their governors accountable. The study findings and analysis further indicate that although there are a number of factors responsible for the short falls of pressmedia's efforts towards the promotion of good governance in Tanzania. Those factors have been clearly stipulated in chapter five of this dissertation. It is on the basis of the entire findings and analysis of the study that some recommendations are put forward as part of the efforts towards improving the pressmedia's role in the promotion of good governance. Such recommendations have been grouped into two main categories namely short term and- long term recommendations, which have been put forward clearly in chapter six of this research report. The underlying assumption of this study is that Tanzania need to have the press media which adhere to its ethics, which produce truth, objective and unbias information for the promotion of good governance in Tanzania.
