Item Challenges and opportunities of peri urban agriculture in the era of climate change: the case of Kinondoni District(University of Dar es Salaam, 2016) Baseka, Muholeza Rosemary LameckThe study examined challenges and opportunities of peri urban agriculture in the era of climate change: case of Kinondoni district in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The survey was conducted in three different wards of Kinondoni District i.e. Goba, Kawe and Kunduchi. Data collection methods included Household interviews, Key informant interviews, Focus Group Discussions (FGD) and in-depth interviews. These were complemented by literature review from other related studies. The study established that, majority of the peri urban farmers are middle aged between 31-50 years, with primary to secondary levels of education, women being slightly many than men. The main reason for practicing agriculture is income gaining. Although a few gain a reliable and substantial income out of it; many end up feeding their families and a little surplus. Peri urban agriculture has employed people from the formal sectors, informal sectors and the retired. More than 65% of the respondents claimed it to be their primary economic activity. There are challenges such as rapid urban growth, land tenure issues and unreliable water resources, peri urban agriculture had managed to prevail as a sustainable livelihood thus far. The implications of CC&V such as unreliable rain, increased temperature, drought, increased pests and disease led to the rise of operational costs making peri urban agriculture unbearable, to mostly the poor, while the richer and the resilient strive to adapt through various ways and forms affordable. The study concludes that, for the sustainability of peri urban agriculture; land allocation and tenure issues must be improved, together with a reliable water supply. Also, policy mechanization, knowledge and expertise are of great need to boost up and upgrade the productivity and efficiency of peri urban agriculture.
