Item Examining enabling conditions for preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS in Kigoma region: the Case of Kigoma District(University of Dar es Salaam, 2010) Ahmadi, SalumuThis study investigated the enabling conditions for preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS in Kigoma District. Specifically, the study sought to identify the forms of enabling conditions for preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS, examine contributions and forms of enabling conditions in reducing the spread of HIV/AIDS in Kigoma District. The study was guided by theoretical explanations and conducted through secondary and primary data. Data come from Rusimbi, Mwanga Kaskazini and Gungu wards from a sample of 80 respondents, which included, households, both local and religious leaders, NGOs representatives dealing with HIV/AIDS, and the youth. Multivariate analysis was used to analyse specific forms of enabling conditions of HIV/AIDS prevention. Campaigns, seminars and work shops, preaching and peer-education were the most commonly used method or strategies. Besides, it was found that the forms of enabling conditions contributed to the level of awareness of the causes and ways through which HIV/AIDS was transmitted, where respondents were able to name at least two means of transmission, and one preventive measure. It was found that HIV/AIDS knowledge and awareness was an important component of HIV/AIDS risk prevention strategies that might influence change in high risk behaviour. Also, the study found a high commitment of all stakeholders to mitigate the effects of HIV/AIDS. However, the effort to mitigate the pandemic was facing challenges which include donor dependency, insufficient VCT facilities. Overall, the result suggests that people need more knowledge about HIV/AIDS from the stakeholders to ensure proper protection against the disease.
