Specifically, the study aimed to analyze the socio-economic situation in the selected mining villages before the inception of NMM; to evaluate the strategic preparations to deal with the open of NMM in established communities; to examine socio-economic costs and benefits brought by NMM operations to the surrounding local communities and more importantly; and to assess the sustainability of benefits received by Tarime local mining communities from NMM. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches in which case that, descriptive survey design was employed. Data were collected using interview, observations, FGDs, questionnaires and documentary reviews. The quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS and content analysis was used to analyze qualitative data. The study findings show that, there were substantial socio-economic benefits to the local communities in Tarime District from NMM mining operations like support in education and health services. On the contrary, the survey data revealed that NMM was also posing threats to the surrounding local communities as it was alleged to pollute water sources, pollute lands by chemicals from tailing dams, produce heavy dusts from rock blasts, destroy the traditional livelihoods of people, displacement and loss of properties rights with no or unfair compensation. The study recommends that cooperation between the local communities and NMM Company should be strengthened, if the existing challenges are to be seriously addressed. There should be proactive policies and training with respect to mine and non-mine employment, and goods and services provision, community and institutional capacity building.enMineral industriesNorth Mara gold mineEconomic aspectsTarime districtTanzaniaSocio-economic effects of large mining projects on local communities in Tanzania: reflections from north Mara gold mine in Tarime district.Thesis
