The study was conducted in Dar es salaam, particularly in Kinondoni and Hale districts. Four schools were studied. These include: St.Mary's International School, Dar es salaam Independent School, St.Laurent International School and Academic international School. This study involved 325 informants: 50 informants were teachers whereas 275 were pupils (grade II and grade VI). Questionnaires, interviews and observations were used as the main instrument in data collection. The findings of the study revealed that both pupils and their teachers have a poor command of the English language. They use English and Kiswahili in interaction inside and outside the classroom. Kiswahili exclusively is also used outside the classroom interaction among pupils as well as between pupils and the non-teaching staff such as secretaries, watchmen, cooks and cleaners.enEnglish languageStudy and teaching (Primary)Language and languagesEnglish medium primary schoolsTanzaniaThe dynamics of language use in Tanzanian English medium primary schools.Thesis
