The study revealed out that service ability at Kilombero Sugar Estate was affected mainly by the nature of duties on which the tractors were employed. Service ability ratios of 82% for field and cane transport tractors were observed. As expected service ability decreased to a small extent, with season (approximately 1% per month). The achieved levels of service ability were high and much better than those recorded on some schemes else where eg. In Ghana. Nevertheless these a figure could be improved by: close attention to routine servicing particularly of items with known liability to damage such as the near when hubs and bolts of newer models of tractors; improve spares availability, improve workshop equipment, and employment of more skilled mechanics, possibly achieved through a formalized programme of an the job training. It would seem reasonable to aim at a serviceability ratio of 90% for field operations.enAgriculture machineryKilombero sugar estateTanzaniaAn investigation of actual and potential performance of agricultural machinery in the field: a case study at Kilombero Sugar EstateThesis
