The aim for soaking is to assess the strength at worst condition, which is to be used in the design. However, test has shown that soil samples stabilised with lime and caved for 7 days followed by 7 days soaking can give higher strength than samples caved for 7 days and tested unsoaked. This observation prompted on investigation to asses the strength development of a lime stabilised soil during curing and soaking. Lateritic soil from Mwanambaya was used for this purpose. In this study CBR strength criterion has been used to investigate the effect of maintained soaking after 1, 3 and 7 days on 7, 14 and 28 days caved samples. The test results indicated a high initial rate of strength development during curing. The rate of strength development slows down with curing age. On soaking the strength drops to its lowest level after one-day. However, this is followed by regain of strength during continued soaking. The lowest strength was recorded after 7 days curing followed by one day soaking. It was fiuther observed that increase in compaction energy reduced the amount of swelling. The volume change due to immersion in water decreased with curing age. In this study stabilised lateritie soil recorded a resistance index of 88%. It is concluded that lime stabilised lateritic soil from Mwanambaya can be used as base course material. The study recommends design CBR based on 7 days cure followed by 1 day soak, or the period of restricting traffic to be extended from 7 days to 14 days in regions where heavy rains are predicted.enSoil stabilizationLimeLateritic soilsTanzaniaThe effect of curing aged and soaking duration on strength and durability of lime stabilized lateritic soilThesis
