Specifically, the study aimed at finding out if there are successes of laboratory modernization at Muhimbili, Amana and Temeke hospitals, find out if there are challenges of laboratory modernization as well as suggest ways of improving Public Private Partnerships. Data was collected through questionnaires, interviews and observation. The findings from the case study revealed that there were successes of laboratory modernization at the surveyed hospitals, as indicated by the respondents. In particular, the findings revealed that laboratory buildings have been renovated, reliable clinical testing, use of modern equipment, use of wider range of equipment, more spacious laboratory, faster services, lab staff were trained, safer and suitable physical environment, good practicals for medicine students, as well as fewer postponed laboratory testing. The findings further revealed that in spite of success of laboratory modernization in the surveyed hospitals, there were a number of challenges, including limited technical support, limited staff skills, limited number of staff, sustainability issues, high operating costs, occasional postponement of laboratory services, inadequate motivation for staff, unreliability of some testing equipment, increasing number of patients compared to facilities, inadequate working environment, as well as unreliability of power supply. Various recommendations on ways of improving public private partnership were given, some of which are as follows: an input of more funds to the laboratories modernization programmes, proper management of laboratory modernization programme funds, effective utilization of local resources for promotion of health programmes, increased support by the government for health services, increased motivation for staff, ensuring fairness in health service delivery, prioritising in laboratory staff training and development, allocating more funds for health care delivery, improving the working environment, effective management of donor funds, which should be associated with transparency and openness, as well as ensuring transparency and openness.This study recommends creating a conducive environment that attracts donor partnership, eeffective management of donor funds, as well as allocation of more funds to the laboratories modernization programmes.enMedical careHealth care deliveryPublic-private partnershipsMedical laboratoriesMuhimbili National HospitalAmana National HospitalTemeke National HospitalDar es SalaamThesis
