Solid waste collection workers are constantly exposed to occupational risks associated with injuries, diseases and traffic accidents during their day- to- day activities. However, assessment and management of such risks in developing countries has been limited due to lack of data, lack of /or disorganized regulatory framework and enforcement system. In recognition of this, this study tends to identify and critically assess the risks that are encountered by waste collectors, study the inter-dependencies between risks and their variables in order to establish risk control strategies for improving the health and safety of solid waste collectors using an alternative risk assessed and management model in solid waste collection. Using a sample of 100 solid waste collectors from 13 solid waste collection enterprises, the study established that solid waste collection is associated with occupational health and safety risks which are attributed by work experience, seasonality, personal protective gears, age, public education, training, workload, collection vehicle design, policies and regulations. Data analysis was carried out using descriptive and inferential statistics. Regression modelling and Stepwise selection technique was applied to the data to identify the occupational risks and risk management variables with the most predictive power for influencing health and safety of waste collectorsenriskmanagementsolidwastecollectionDar es SalaamDevelopment of an alternative risk assessment and management model in solid waste collection the case of Dar es Salaam-TanzaniaThesis
