It included analysis of crash data, survey of condition and spacing of pedestrian crossings, and observing where pedestrian crossed the road relative to crossings. Interview and focus group discussion were also conducted. From 2007 to 2010 pedestrian fatalities fluctuated between 8 and 17 per 100,000 residents which is about 10 times more than what was experienced in highly motorised countries. Over 94% of the crashes occurred when pedestrians were crossing a road, 18 and 21 hrs having the highest crashes. 60% of crossings were in good condition. Some roads had reasonable spacing while others did not. On arterials with high proportion of public transport vehicles or high speed with crossings matching pedestrian desire lines, more than 70% of pedestrians used the crossings. On less busy roads 32% to 35% used the crossings, 25% used crossings at signalised intersections. Over 80% of respondents understood basic road crossing precautions, 50% were not aware on wearing clothes which reflect light during night and 21% did not understand the meaning of pedestrian signals. It was concluded the fatality rate for pedestrians in Kinondoni is comparatively high. Traffic volume and pedestrian desire lines influenced usage of formal crossings. Road safety knowledge is good except for the low awareness of the need to wear clothes that are visible in the dark and the meaning of pedestrian signals. We recommend improving provisions for pedestrians by installation of intelligent pedestrian crossings in line with the pedestrian desire lines.
