Specific objectives of the study covered investigation of employees understanding of the objectives, process and procedures of performance appraisal system. Also, the study examined the employee’s participation in the appraisal process and how the performance appraisal has been able to identify employee’s strengths and weakness and programmes put in place to address weaknesses and reward performance. To collect the required data, questionnaires, interviews and documentary reviews were used. Self-administered questionnaires were distributed to 50 respondents, who yielded a 94 percent return rate. The data collected were analysed with the help of the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS), particularly in cross tabulation. In consequence, the findings were tabulated and summarized, with percentages obtained. The study revealed that there is an effective performance appraisal system in the selected commercial banks and the process is given the seriousness it deserves. Findings revealed a high level of employee understanding of PAS. In addition, the study findings have also revealed high level of employee participation in the appraisal process and the system has been able to identify employee’s weakness and strength and put programs to reward performance. Based on the study findings, it is recommended that performance appraisal should reflect on the capabilities of the employees and enhance the knowledge base. The performance appraisal process has to be comprehensive in its approach. It should help in defining the goals of the company in a more cohesive manner which would be achievable by the employees and beneficial to organizations and the employees. The selected commercial banks should ensure that their PAS correlates with their organization’s philosophies to identify employees’ strengths and weaknesses and provide training opportunities and potential programme to reward performance. In addition, supervisors should be given management skills through the training on the delivery of performance appraisals and feedback management. As the commercial banks continue developing rapidly.
