The objectives of the study were to: identify factors that influenced communication in schools, investigate ways in which adequate and reliable information for school decisions are acquired and find out ways to improve information flow in schools. The case study approach was used to achieve the study objectives. Questionnaires, interviews, documentary reviews and observation constituted techniques for data collection. The study found that, lack of advanced means of communication, non conversant in English, interpersonal conflicts and dictatorial leadership were among factors that led to ineffective communication in Tanzanian secondary schools. Other findings revealed that, major decisions in schools were not arrived at after the consensus of the majority because of communication breakdown between the decision makers and the stakeholders, which is a result of poor representation and lack of a collection system of ideas from the grassroots. The decision-making component was included in this study due to its involvement in information exchange at one level or another within the school organisation. The study also indicated ways to improve the relationships within the school administration and enhance effective communication in schools. Perceptions of the teachers, students, parents and board members on effective communication were also collected. Recommendations drawn from the study included; development of communication networks between the school and external constituencies, effective strategies for transmitting and gathering information, participation in decision making among various stakeholders, and lastly, the content of communication being meaningful and contributing to the attainment of its purpose.enEducationSecondary schoolsPersonnel service in secondary educationCommunicartionFactors influencing communication in Tanzanian Secondary Schools: a study of four selected secondary schools in Dar es Salaam region.Thesis
