Specifically it investigates the role of outsourcing of container handling operations in enhancing port financial performance. It examines how outsourcing of container handling operations affect port efficiency, determines how outsourcing of container handling operations influence customer services in port and evaluates the role of outsourcing of container handling operations in improving port competitiveness. Both primary and secondary data were used in the study. The populations of this study were all Tanzania Ports Authority stakeholders particularly clearing agents and staff of Tanzania Ports Authority. The study involved collecting secondary data from Tanzania Ports Authority and primary data from clearing agents. Economic indicators were used to anaylse secondary data and SPSS was used to anaylse primary data. The findings revealed that outsourcing of container handling operations have positive impact on port performance. Since the port started outsourcing container handling operations with different private inland container depots, the port revenues rose up and more customers were attracted to use the port of Dar es salaam.
