dc.description.abstractEstimate of evaporation losses plays a significant role, in the regulation and control of water along any natural water body. This study aims at quantify the amount of water which was lost due to evaporation along part of the Pangani river basin between Nyumba ya Mungu and Kirua. This river reach is 118 km in length and of swampy nature. The swamps expand during the wet season and cover an area of about 444 km2 and it shrinks in the dry season to a coverage of 175 km2. Two evaporation models, namely the Penman and Morton models are applied to estimate the monthly potential evaporation losses, and the results obtained are compared to the estimate from the mass-balance model. It is found that there is considerable discrepancy between the estimation of water losses with the aid of the mass balance compared to Penman or Morton model. This means that there are some other components such as abstraction due to irrigation that can have a considerable significance on the mass balance of the system. The results from Penman and Morton models are more or less the same when compared to each other on monthly or annual basis. Chapter 1 gives an introduction to the problem and explains the objective of the study, while chapter 2 gives the literature review. A brief description of the study area is given in chapter 3. The methods which were used in the study are explained in Chapter 4, and the results are presented in Chapter 5. Finally the conclusion drawn from the study is given, and a few recommendations for further research are made.en_US
