This work describes the coupling reactions of hydrations (2, 4 imidazoledenediones) and 3 amino hydantoins (3 amino 2, 4 imidazolidinedions) with 5 halo 3 methyl 2 butenolides. (5 halo 3 methyl 2 (5H) furanone). Also reactions of hydantoins and 3 aminohydantoins with benzylchloride or benzylbromide are discussed. Reactions between hydantoins with 5 halo 3 methyl 2- butenolides are feasible. 5- (4 methoxyphenyl) hydantoin gave, though in llow yield 3 (3- methyl 2, 4 imidazolidinedione. This reaction as well as the other similar attempted reactions were performed in basic medium (NaaCO3 and NaOCH3) and in DME (an aprotic solvent) under nitrogen atmosphere. Reactions of hydantoins and 3 aminohydantoins with benzylchloride or benzylbromine gave moderate yields of 3 benzylhydanioins and 3 benzylaminohydantoins respectively. Screening of the compounds synthesized as strga germination stimulants was not done. Optimization of reaction conditions for the coupline step is yet to be done and it is therefore suggested that further research should be done along these lines.en_US
