Road pavements are designed to carry predetermined amount of traffic before they begin to show signs of deterioration. However, if such pavements are not well designed and/or constructed, distresses occur earlier than expected. Rutting is the distress that reduces the useful service life of the pavement and creates serious hazards for road users. This research analyses the factors which are responsible for premature rutting on Kilwa road in Dar es Salaam. The study investigated the causes of premature rutting through review of pavement and mix designs, visual inspection, axle load survey, rut depth and surface deflection measurements, DCP test, excavation of test pits, drilling the asphalt concrete cores, laboratory testing and statistical analysis of the obtained pavement parameters. The investigation revealed that, premature rutting is the result of poor workmanship, use of inappropriate asphalt penetration grade, inadequate compaction of the base course and materials of poor quality used in the wearing and base course layers. In addition, the statistical analysis by regression revealed that the primary causes of premature rutting were low air voids and high asphalt content in the hot mix asphalt (HMA) used for construction. In order for a road to carry the expected traffic to its design life, the Asphalt Concrete (AC) surfacing should be removed and replaced with a high stability AC mix, and also the base course should be stabilized with cement (C2) to strengthen the existing weak material. To reduce/eliminate the problem of premature rutting in the future constructions, Consultants and Clients should extensively review designs and strictly implement quality control during construction.en_US
