Abstract

This study assessed the possibility of introducing an Environmental Management System (EMS) at Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC). The data concerning TPDC's activities was collected from different places example at the offices and during field works. At the office, different department such as Department of Exploration, Production and Technical Services Finance and Administration Services and Marketing and Investment were covered. For the field works data was collected at from Mafia Island, Kilwa, Rufiji, Mtwara, Lindi, Mkuranga, and SongoSongo Island. The mode of data collection was through questionnaire, interviews and documentary review. The data was analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The findings indicated that lack of strategies and proper commitment on environmental issues, absence of environmental policy, lack of expertise on environmental, absence of environmental unit at TPDC, lack of information, knowledge and skills on EMS were identified as key challenges toward introduction of EMS which caused by. The study proposes and recommends the strategies that may be used to introduce EMS at TPDC. It is believed that the systematic introduction of EMS will enable TPDC to minimize Environmental Impacts of its operations.
