dc.description.abstractThe high resolution spectroscopic technique through laser excitation of fast ion – beams is employed on Xc^+ - ions. With this techniques, the hyperfine structure and isotope shifts are determined. The first portion of the thesis is devoted to a description of the experimental apparatus required for these measurements. The electo-magnetic isotope separator adopted for this Uppsala isotope separator crucial to the formation of an isotopically pure, intense and stable ion beam are discussed. Next, a general theory of the laser is presented. Principles of gas lasers, of which the pump laser, the argon ion laser, is a member are described. A system theory and operating procedure for the CR-18 Argon ion laser employed to achieve an intense stable pump beam foer the dyelasers in general are given before the features of the dye-laser used in the measurements, the CR-599 scanning dye-laser system, are discussed. Alignment and operating procedures for the system are described to realize single frequency scannable output. Proper alignment together with electronic stabilization result in an output laser beam useful for saturation spectroscopy undertaken here. The next section of the Thesis presents the measurements of hyperfine structure and isotope shifts in Xe II. Theory of hyperfine structure and isotope shift is given. Experimental arrangement for the measurements is described, followed by tables of results and spectra. Conclusions are than drawn on the results of measurements. At the end of the thesis is an appendix with two sections. The first section deals with lifetime measurements including methods involving lasers. The last section describes components of the detection system used in the measurements. The performance of these components is discussed too.en_US
