| dc.description.abstract | This study provides an analysis of some of the dilemmas surrounding the issue of whether or not to mine in or around national parks, which are areas of valuable biodiversity. Case studies of mining activities and their impacts to the environment are discussed. The study makes an analysis of the statutory provisions in the 2002 revised National Parks Act, Mining Act, 1998 and the Mining (Environmental Management and Protection) Regulations, 1999 which permit mining activities in national parks. The analysis shows statutory provisions which put in place environmental safeguards in conservation areas and the manner in which the same cannot be completely relied upon to justify), mining in national parks. Examples in which mining has caused environmental pollution and degradation are shown in details including case law. Mining has also caused habitat destruction and significant losses of biodiversity species. The methodology used was the library and field research by interviewing stakeholders who shared the view that mining is not compatible with the conservation of national parks. The study has learnt that some of the larger mining companies have taken steps to address biodiversity issues. Although such remedial actions are encouraging, examples exist of mining companies with advanced technologies that have caused environmental catastrophes. The study concludes that mining is not compatible with conservation of national parks and therefore should not be allowed, and recommends for a repeal of statutory provisions that leave room to undertake such activities. | en_US |
