In dealing with any system, the user must be able to control it to any final desired state. This requirement has necessitated the design of control systems, state feedback control being one way of achieving this. In designing a state feedback control system, the designer has to know all the system states. For observable systems, this is not much of a problem since the states are readily available through measurements. But most of the systems met in day-to-day life are complex, with a combination of available and unavailable states. When a state feedback control is to be designed for such a complex system, the only logical way of knowing the unavailable states is through estimation. Wiener and Kolmogorov pioneered in this area when they designed, in continuous time, filters that could handle estimation, smoothing as well as prediction. Kalman, in the early 1960's, follower in their footsteps when he designed a digital equivalence of their filters. This is the famous Kalman filter that we know today. Luenberger carried on from there and designed the Luenberger observer in the early 70's [9]. His is specialized filter in that it handles estimation only. He presented his findings in continuous time. In this dissertation, a discrete Luenberger observer is presented. It is designed based on the discrete Walsh series. The design has been successfully tested by analysing a system whose exact states are known and one which is unobservable. Comparison between the exact values and the estimates obtained through the discrete observer has been made and the results show that the estimates approach the actual states asymptotically and within a few seconds, no difference between the two is apparent.en_US
