Abstract
Computers have become part of the normal office landscape for many years, since computer knowledge started. Many office functions have been converted from paper to electronic form. Centralized databases have been created. Computer networks have been developed so that users at one computer can store and retrieve data on another computer in a centralized area. This centrally stored data can be shared among multiple computer users using data communication networks. These and many other advantages, make the data communication network to be the nerve of many business operations. The primary objective of this dissertation was to conduct an Information Technology feasibility study at Tanzania Postal Bank Limited (TPB) so as to establish the status of .IT and to propose a way forward. The study found that TPB has Local Area Networks (LAN) at its current few branches, but these LANs are not interlinked in any way. This drawback makes the bank to conduct inter-branch operations manually. The dissertation concentrated in this particular area of finding a way of creating inter-branch Wide Area Network, which is the key for data communication. The dissertation focuses on analyzing different ways used to create WAN and finding out different types of network services offered by data communication operators in Tanzania. Later the dissertation comes out with a proposal and design of a suitable way of creating WAN for TPB in particular. The proposed method is justified in terms of: Cost, system performance (stability and speed of operation) and maintainability, easy in network extension, technical personnel support and its security. The dissertation also came out with the proposed means of securing: hardwares, data communication network and data to be transmitted, since security in banking institution is of no compromise.
