Abstract

comparative analysis of security aspects is a determining factor for the capacity, cost and design of computer network security. Comparative analysis has been done at low scales in the past. This study does adequate comparative analysis of security threats in order to determine dominant security threats. To find dominant security threats interviews were used as a preliminary investigation for gathering opinions from computer users. The security measures were analysed basing on International Standards Organisation (ISO 17799). The methods used in collecting data included questionnaire, action, case study and desk research. Findings show that technical security threats are dominant in terms of frequency and gravity compared to non-technical security threats. Lack of layered security (security in depth) is a major vulnerability in Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sci (MUHAS) computer networks. The study combines layered security with intrusion detection’ systems in order to improve monitoring and control of security events. The study further proposes information security policy and security awareness programs as guides for achieving MUHAS computer network security
