dc.description.abstract | With the formation of the East African Community (EAC) several steps have been taken at community level to achieve the intended goals of the community. Among the steps taken are the initiatives to integrate the region’s capital markets in order to facilitate capital flows in the region thus building a stronger regional economy. However, there has been a number of limitations; both at regional and at national levels. At national level, the presence of foreign exchange restrictions coupled with the slow pace shown by the member states to liberalize their capital accounts have been noted to be among the major obstacles to integration. It has been observed in this study that integration of capital markets in East Africa is made difficult to achieve due to legal problems including exchange control restrictions and other problems including reluctance to liberalize the respective capital accounts of the member states to allow free movement of capital amongst the East African countries. It is recommended, among other things, that Tanzania should relax her foreign exchange laws to allow free movement of capital in East Africa in order to achieve the community’s intended goals. In connection to the foregoing, Tanzania should ensure that the legislation on CDS is timely enacted in order to control exchange rate volatility by the time the capital account is fully liberalized. | en_US |
