E 802.11 WLAN is the standard for wireless local area networks. The standard defines contention Based distributed coordination function (DCF) as its fundamental media access control mechanism. DCF is for asynchronous data transfer where stations contend for the medium using carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA).CSMA/ CA enables stations to listen o the medium before transmitting and if collision is detected, the station randomly choses back off counter (Cw) and perform back off handles collisions it has been subjected to throughput degradation in the network due to unnecessary delay associated with it. This research introduced intelligent back off counter (IBC). The IBS will not necessarily wait for Cw to decrement to zero to transmit, instead will establish optimum number of consecutive idle slots that a station will choose its Cw and while decrementing the IBS will be monitoring if consecutive idle slots establishes has been reached so as to allow transmission. Simulation results show that the new algorithm was able to reduce network delay in different manner depending on network standard but the best results were by 18.2% which was observed in 802.11b and there was improvement in throughout performance with the best performance was by 12.31% which was observed in 802.11b also maximum throughout performance with the best performance was by 12.31% which was observed in 802.11b also maximum throughout was achieved with larger number of stations in comparison with traditional BEBen_US
