Abstract

This study investigates the role of information dissemination in addressing breast cancer and screening behaviour in Tanzania: a Case Study of Morogoro Rural District. The study adopts Berlo’s 1960 Model of Communication, slightly modified by Rupia (2013). It used both secondary and primary sources of information. Qualitative data were analysed descriptevely while quantitative data through the SPSS software. Data were collected from 70 purposevely selected respondents from Kiroka and Kinonko villages comprising of 17 men, 42 women who have not been affected with breast cancer, 5 breast cancer patients, 3 breast cancer survivors and 3 village leaders. A structured self- administered questionnaire was used to collect data from literate breast cancer patients. Interviews were conducted with key information generators and disseminators and health workers. Focus Group Discussions were conducted to both literate and illiterate breast cancer patients. Direct observation was employed to supplement information obtained from questionnaires and interviews. Key findings reveal that there was shortage of qualified health care professionals, rural community members relied on radio and relatives as their reliable sources of information on breast cancer and lack of knowledge on breast cancer self-screening. Shortage of funds required paying for breast cancer education that was broadcasted via television and radio by information generators and disseminators was also a challenge. Major recommendations include the increase of Breast Cancer Healthcare Centres and Clinics. Also, healthcare professionals should be well trained so that they can to provide breast cancer education and information that would enable the rural community to understand breast cancer, its causes, risk factors, diagnosis and treatment
