Abstract

Soil erosion along the coast of Indian Ocean North of Dar es Salaam has been a major issue that attracted attention of many people. Kunduchi beach area is one of such affected parts in that coast. Each year the situation deteriorates further as soil erosion continues to destroy the nearshore and other infrastructures along the coast. Kunduchi beach is an example of the large resorts located along Dar es Salaam coast faced with serious soil erosion problems caused by wave action, tides, climatic changes and land use practices along the coast. The mathematical model we have developed is based on the modes of transportation of particles that is bedload and suspended load. These have been used to study the transport of sediments in shallow waters along Kunduchi beach area. The model consists of two partial differential equations for the amount of suspended sediments, and the bed elevation coupled with the bedload. The upwind numerical scheme was employed to solve the model and it was implemented using the PDESOL software package. The model is intended for the use as a tool for the prediction of the trends of sediment movement along the coast of Kunduchi beach area. Also the model was intended to pave way for further studies on the hydrodynamic activities acting on the particles along the Coast of Dar-es Salaam.
