Abstract

Power Line Communication (PLC) in Tanzania can effectively and efficiently be reliable upon minimizing or eradicating the factors affecting such application. Lightening being the major among the factors hindering the PLC application gives the area that one could be in a position to implement and make PLC application real. However evaluation of the effects of electromagnetic interference in medium voltage distribution for power line communication application is unique. In this research the voltage induced at each point of the medium voltage line was determined and the lightning injected current was modeled as impulse current with 10 kA value holding a rise time of 0.36/26.8 ųs (0.36 ųs rise time and 26.8 ųs fall time) and 5 km line for medium voltage. With the aid of attached script file element on the circuit the clear output diagrams were obtained. The known current in frequency domain (Laplace) is inserted using pie model facilitation. The geometry so considered was existing geometry in which a shield wire is situated at one meter above the three conductors, which as well as separated by one meter. The evaluation was numerically calculated with the aid of Theethayi model by finite time difference domain (FTDM) and simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK software. The field strength gets low as the wave propagation continues, at the end point of the graph; investigation showed that as the field strength was alternating the voltage was induced. The overshoot was shown at different levels in the medium voltage as the lightening signal struck. At few initial meters, the observation at the three distances (i.e. 2 m, 4 m and 6 m respectively) showed that the voltage was induced but at the end the matter was different (i.e. at 2.5 km showed significant amount of voltage induced).
