Abstract
This study evaluated the current environmental performance of Darbrew Limited Company. It also assessed the possibility of developing a strategy to introduce industrial ecology linkages across potential industrial/economic centres within the neighbourhood of Ubungo ward where DARBREW LTD is located. Interviews, questionnaires, observation and documentary analysis were methods used to collect data, and data analysis was done using the Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS). Results indicated that there is a possibility of improving environmentasl performance of DARBREW LTD on implementation of IE principles. 70.8% of the respondents at DBL and 80.1% of the respondents at TANESCO including top managements pointed out that there is a need improve environmental performances. Solid waste management especially disposal was perceived by majority of respondents 78.1% to be a major problem. Also, it was observed that TANESCO Power Station is currently wasting energy in the form of waste heat of more than 37.5MJ/s at not less than 500oC in its exhaust pipes. The study predicts that if this heat is put into use, it might reduce the fraction of available energy directly discarded to the atmosphere by about 80%. What's more, it might reduce operating costs of DBL of 1,200,000/= Tshs per day on fuel (furnace oil), 458,773/= Tshs per day on electricity and 300,000/= Tshs per day on water, since steam from outside is estimated to be a cheaper alternative. And also reduce the 3129.98kg/day CO2, 5.434kg/day NOX, and 58.69kg/day SOx added to the atmosphere daily by DBL out of its boiler operation. From the obtained findings, the study recommends DBL and its neighbouring companies especially TANESCO to consider establishing an industrial symbiosis at Ubungo area.
