In Tanzania most of the industrial wastewaters are not treated but discharged into lagoons where they emit Greenhouse gases. Sisal wastewater is one of such cases. Anaerobic digestion of sisal wastes can produce biogas from which electricity can be generated in line with mitigating a number of environmental problems. A study was conducted in Tanga region at Hale- Segera sisal factory to investigate potential for power generation and reduction of emission according to Clean Development mechanism (CDM) methodologies. The study is to use the captured and collected Methane gas from biogas production in anaerobic wastewater treatment system of the Hale Estate Sisal factory effluent, and evaluate how best to generate bioelectrical according to (CDM) methodologies. Through the natural decaying of the wastes by microorganisms, biogas is continuously generated by conversion of organic matter to biogas at different phases. The produced Methane gas from biogas is converted into electricity by special generators. The results revealed that the existing pilot plant reduces emission of Methane gas to 8% which is 420 tCO2e per year as compared to 4,250 tCO2e per year at baseline stage. The reduction of Greenhouse gases can be further realised by connecting the generated power to the National grid. However further research is needed to assess financial viability of the project.en_US
