Thirty six rice varieties derived from three sources were evaluated for yield and other important characters at two different sites within the University Farm at Morogoro. The experiment, using a triple lattice design was carried out during the 1983 main rain season. Analyses of variance revealed highly significant differences among the genotypes tested. Genotypes studied reacted differently to the two environments but site means were generally higher for Ngerengere site than for the Horticulture site. Although there were highly significant genotype x environment interactions for most of the traits (except number of panicles per plant and yield per plant), four varieties namely Afaa Mwanza, M-49, M-38 and IR 42 were consistently high yielding at both sites. IR 42 was also found to combine most of the desirable characters. The presence of significant genotype x environment interactions underlined the need for multi location testing and the need for identifying the appropriate location for rice breeding work in Tanzania. High heritability estimates were found for plant height, number of filled grains per panicle, 1000 grain weight and 50% flowering. Genetic advance following selection was predicted to be considerable for these characters. Correlation and path analyses further identified number of filled grains per panicle, number of panicles per plant and 1000 grain weight to be important characters that influence grain yield. On the other hand, 50% flowering was found to be relatively unimportant in determining grain yield. The results obtained are presented and discussed in relation to the Morogoro based rice improvement in Tanzania.en_US
