Abstract
This study investigated the tutors’ satisfaction with their involvement in decision making in teachers´ training colleges in Morogoro region, in Tanzania. Specifically, the study aimed at: identifying aspects in which tutors are involved in decision making in TTCs; analyzing the strategies employed to make tutors involved in decision making in TTCs and; examining how tutors involvement in decision making influence their commitment to work. The study employed qualitative research approach with single-embedded research design in collecting and analyzing data. The area of study was Morogoro region whereby purposive sampling and simple random sampling techniques were used to select thirty nine informants (three principals, three academic deans, three dean of students and thirty tutors). Data were collected through interviews, focus group discussion and documentary review. The data collected were analyzed following the Miles and Huberman model of qualitative data analysis. The study findings proposed three levels in which tutors are involved in decision making in TTCs namely the individual level, the group level and the organizational level. Within these three levels, various potential aspects that tutors are involved in making college decisions were found. The aspects include general college planning, academic issues, college rules, regulations and discipline, income generation projects, staff and students’ welfares, and college environment. It was also discovered that, the behaviour of principal acting in transparency, giving motivation to tutors, giving tutors responsibilities, valuing tutors’ ideas, empowering the tutors, volunteering for new projects, tutors sharing innovative ideas with colleagues and assisting colleagues in carrying out classroom duties became very important strategies employed by the principal in involving tutors in decision making. Besides, it was revealed that, college principals’ various strategies to involve tutors in decision making enhanced academic achievements in colleges such that action of principal acting in transparency, giving motivation to tutors, giving tutors responsibilities, valuing tutors’ ideas, empowering the tutors, volunteering for new projects, tutors sharing innovative ideas with colleagues and assisting colleagues in carrying out classroom duties were very important strategies employed to move on the mission and vision of the colleges. The study recommends to the Ministry of Education Science and Technology to stipulate well the financial regulations that make inclusive budgeting to be transparent and to be adhered to by the college principals. In order for the tutors to work hard, motivation is very important as when they are motivated they will work hand in hand with the college principals and other college administrators to accomplish the intended goals. Finally, it is recommended that the college principals should strongly value tutors’ ideas and empower them through giving working tools to enable them being satisfied with their working environment.
