Abstract
This is a retrospective analysis of cardiac disorders in children aged one month to 15 years at Muhimbili Medical Centre. The case notes of 1 07 newly diagnosed cardiac patients who were ten between January 1 984 through December 1985 were analyzed. The most common kinds of heart disease were congenital heart disease (77.6%), rheumatic heart disease (1 6.8%) and cardiomyopathies (5.6%). Congestive cardiac failure was the most common complication seems (25%). Surgical treatment was carried out abroad in 10.9% of the patients, although it was indicated L1 an additional 39.3%. Medical therapy was given to 55.1%. Of all patients analysed 17 .8% lost to follow-up, 6.7 died, 55.7% improved, 29.5 remained stable, 14.8% worsened.
