The numerical solution of the unsteady, open channel flow equations by a four - point implicit finite difference method is applied to the problem of flood rotting in open channels. The one - dimension St. Venant equations are solved numerically using the Newton - Raphson iteration technique and an IBM - PC compatible micro-computer. The computer program version 1 was checked with a backwater curve computer program and then tested with a numerical solution given by Wen-Hsiung Li 1983. The results of the program agreed well with the steady state backwater curve results and with the unsteady example calculation of Li.en_US
