Abstract
A mathematical model of hospitalization and community home-based care for People living with HIV/AIDS in high prevalence settings was studied and eval-Uation of benefits and cost-effectiveness was carried out. In the epidemiolog-ical model, seven classes of the differen populations were considered namely susceptibles, infectives, screened infectives, AIDS population, screeened AIDS population, hospitalized population and community home-based care (CHBC) population. Qualitative and numerical analyses of the model were done. The qualitative result show that the model has two equilibrium the disease-free equilib- rium and the endemic equilibrium point. Furthermore, the economic model was formulated from the epidemiological model. Costs and benefits of HIV/AIDS interventions were evaluated using the economic model. The interventions con- sidered were screening as the base intervention, then screening combined with condom use, screening combined with hospitalization, screening combined with community home-based care and all the interventions combined. Numerical re- sults showed that the combinaton of screening and condom use was the most cost effective strategy followed by screening plus CHBC, followed by implementing all the strategies combined(ALL) and screening and hospitalization is the least. In terms of health benefits screening and condom use has more health benefits than the rest of the combination.
