Abstract
Project Management has developed in the 20th century as a recognized field of practice with origin in engineering and construction projects. These origins have influenced the development of project management as practitioners strive for professional status through establishment of practice and performance standards. The principal goal of this study was to map at what extent and how project management is used across various organizations in Tanzania. The current theories and practices of the study area show the need for organizations to change and adopt project management practices in order to become more effective and competitive. The study began with the development of an analysis methodology. This analysis methodology was a research tool of a questionnaire type consisting of three parts that is composed of a combination of closed-ended and open-ended questions that measure project management practices. Those questions covered project management processes, tools, knowledge areas and five project phases. This methodology was then used to collect information from 30 different organizations.
