Abstract

In this dissertation technique, systems and networks for signal multiplexing have been analyzed, with the main objective of identifying the best suitable methods/technology for digital broadcasting industry planned to be launched in Tanzania. A comprehensive study on TDM and OFDM has been analyzed. Numerous figures and tables have been included. Chapter one is analyzing the present status of the broadcasting industry in Tanzania, starting with the history of broadcasting as launched during the colonial times. It also covers various stages of broadcasting growth in Tanzania. It further introduces the issue of establishment of multiplex operation as a result of introduction of digital broadcasting in the country. In chapter two various multiplexing techniques were analysed and hence recommendations of suitable digital multiplexing technique and best Modulation Scheme drawn. In chapter three TDM specifications are analysed to determine the most suitable ones for adoption by our digital broadcasting industry. In chapter four TDM-Transmitter equipment configurations is discussed, OFDM performance, ITU agreed technical standards and receivers for digital modulated signal reception are discussed. Chapter five is a discussion on the planning of multiplex network operation in Tanzania territory during transition period and thereafter. Various recommendations are discussed which include establishment of MUX at various geographic levels countrywide. Chapter six concludes the study and puts up final suggestions and recommendations with regard to analog to digital broadcasting in Tanzania.
