Abstract

The study aimed at investigating “The essence of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the Tanzanian mining industry”. To solidify information the study used the views and opinions of stakeholders of mining industry such as employees, community members around mine and management of the BGML. Documentary review assisted in obtaining important information regarding the CSR through mining sector. This study seeks to assess the impact of CSR as result of mining investors in Tanzania economy. The study was purely qualitative and adopted a case study. The data were collected using interviews, questionnaires and document analysis. The population sample involved 100 respondent were simple random, stratified random and purposive sampling. Sample respondents came from BGML management team, villagers and leaders from seven villages around the mine and BGML employees and branch trade union leaders. The data were subsequently analyzed using SPSS. Interpretation of the findings from research indicates that, there is a relationship between the CSR and the performance of the BGML. That is: organizations success is viewed as dependent on how well it manages it relationship with community around the mine as one of stakeholders. Also that, each stakeholder eg. Employees, community, including those with no legally-based contractual relationship, is seen as having a stake in the activities of BGML. From the study, it is recommended that the government should participate in a selective mining project of strategic importance to the country, a need to enacting a mining act or amend the existing one and incorporate the clause which will highlight more on CSR so that Tanzanian can benefit more through mine sector and a need to sponsorship to stakeholders; being it community, employees, government, schools and other alike. However, the major limitation of the study is resources and time constraints that is reason why the study only covered some management members, some union leaders and some village leaders.
