Abstract

This study was carried out at Lugoba Quarry with the aim of finding out the sustainability performance in social, environmental, institutional and economic aspects. The findings obtained were expected to be used for getting a proper solution which would enable quarry operations to be practiced in a sustainable manner so that problems resulting from quarry operations would be minimized or eliminated for the betterment of the current and future generation. The study employed various tools to ensure proper collection of data during survey, these were” questionnaires, interview guide, observation schedules and literature sources. Performance indictors were formulated to help in the examination of extent of sustainability practice at Lugoba quarry. The indicators were focused on four aspects of sustainability which are economic, environmental, social and institutional aspects. With the help of the sustainability analysis framework and sustainability assessment framework for the integrated sustainability, the study revealed that the quarry did not have any sustainability position or strategy employed, a part from obtaining the compliance requirements and ensuring that the operators would not operate in loss. Sustainable practice should be emphasized to reduce or eliminate problems caused by quarry operations to strike a balance amongst quarry operations effects, benefit and sustainable aggregates supply.
