Abstract
This study was conducted to assess the roles of occupational health and safety management system. It was conducted in the manufacturing industries in Dar es Salaam, in which four manufacturing industries were selected. The study aimed to investigate the roles of occupational health and safety in reducing workplace accidents, injuries, work related diseases and damages of property. Research variables were formulated so as to test research objectives. These include occupational health and safety management system, workplace accidents, workplace injuries work related diseases and damages of property. The study was guided by the accident proneness theory, Maslow theory and Henrich’s domino theory. This study employed the cross-sectional design and was grounded under the positivism approach. The study involved 65 employees from manufacturing industries in Dar es Salaam in which four manufacturing industries were conveniently selected. The data were collected by using primary source of data in which the questionnaire method was employed. The study revealed that occupational health and safety management system has important roles to contribute in reducing work place hazards like workplace accidents, injuries, work related diseases and damages of property. It was recommended that all stakeholders of occupational health and safety like employers, employees, government and international agencies to work together particularly in disseminating information, awareness and standards that will result to the reduction of workplace accidents, injuries, work related diseases and damages of property in the company.
