Abstract
Evolution of technology in telecommunications industry, stiff market competition and the requirements for new and integrated services are among factors that made the telecommunications service providers to think on ways of improving their networks to ensure their survival in the market. In this dissertation an investigation is conducted on the possibility of the incumbent provider of fixed line telecommunication services in Tanzania, Tanzania Telecommunications Company Limited (TTCL) to migrate to latest telecommunication technology which will be of customers’ preference. The new technology supports Fixed to Mobile Convergence, and it is independent of telecommunication access mode. The Author sees the new technology as leverage for telecommunications service providers from multiple platforms to single platform for multiple services and breakage of the vendor wedlock, it is also a venture for third party application and service developers to be part of the delivery strategy and partners in telecommunications business. She also noted the efforts and collaboration between telecommunications associations in provision of standards that resulted into implementation of Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS).The Author further noted that the existence of Soft switches, media gateways, IP network, mobile and fixed networks, Integrated Services Digital Network(ISDN), Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) within the existing TTCL Network as great potentials towards migration into IMS. However, its financial capability may impede the migration. TTCL will require further study and trial runs on IMS to satisfy itself on the quality of services and new applications.
