Abstract
Muhimbili Medical Centre incorporating the Faculty of Medicine, University of Dar es Salaam is one of the three Consultant Hospitals in the country. Some of the main functions of the centre include. Teaching Undergraduate and Postgraduate doctors, Nurses and Paramedical cadres. Serving as the main consultant in the country. Actring as a Regional and referral hospital for Dar es Salaam and Coast Regions. It has the largest laboratory facilities and the only Radiotherapy unit in the country. Department of Obsteric and Gynaecology has 248 beds. There are 181 beds for obstetric patients and 67beds for gynaecological patients. Sewa Haji Block: There are two gynaecological wards with 67 beds. New Maternity Block with 181 beds for high risk obstetric services. Outpatient Service: outpatient facilities are provided for gynaecologic and antenatal patients. These are patoients referred from dispensaries patients. There are patients referred from dispensaries, district hospitals and private clinics in Dar es salaam and Coast Regions in patient Service: admissions to the department comes as emergencies from areas around Dar es salaam or as referrals from within Dar es salaam as well as upcountry stations. Elective admissions are affected through gynaecologic and antenatal clinics while emergency admissions are through the casuality. Obstetric Service: Obstetric services provided by the department include:- Anternal services for high risk pregnancies at Muhimbili Centre. Intrapartum services for both normal and high risk deliveries at the N.M.B. labour ward and postnatal services for those who had difficult deliveries. Both antenatal and intrapartum patients are referred from clinics and hospitals within Dar es salaam and Coast Regions
