Abstract

An attempt has been made to characterize the Natural Pozzolanas found in Arusha Region. Samples of natural pozzolana were taken from five villages in Monduli District and three villages in Arumeru District. The idea was to find out whether the natural pozzolana found in these villages could be used by villagers in low cost housing. Physical and chemical analysis of the pozzolana was done from samples taken at each village. The properties determined were chemical composition and setting times of pozzolime mixes of different mix proportions. Strength tests were done on pozzolana: lime:sand cubes of different mix proportions. It was found out that strengths ranging from 2.6 – 5.6 MPa could be achieved at 2days and values greater than 7MPa at 60 days. The values obtained at 7 days were comparable to strength values obtained with sand cement bricks sold in the market. It was concluded that the natural pozzolanas found in Arusha Region could be used with lime to make bricks for low cost housing
