Abstract
Assessment of compliance to environmental impact mitigation measures by six selected photographic tourist lodges/camps was conducted in 2010. The study involved Mivumo Lodge, Upekee Lodge, Behobeho Lodge, Amara Camp, Retreat Camp and Lake Manze Camp operating in Environmental Sensitive Area (ESA) of the Northern Sector of Selous Game Reserve and consultation was done to Staff, Experts, Tourist, Lodges/Camps Managers and Workers. The study assessed the impacts management, compliance to stipulated mitigation measures, institutional strength and adherence to environmental policies, laws and regulations. The study involved review of EISs and relevant records, site observation, interviews and discussions and administration of questionnaires. While primary data was analysed using SPSS (Ver. 17) to enable cross tabulation and multi response for calculations of frequencies, secondary data was summarized using Ms EXCEL 2007. The study findings revealed unsatisfactory (29.3%) compliance to environmental impact mitigation measures which was attributed by inadequacy of EISs; proprietor‘s laxity and compromised EIA implementation in favour of profit, pleasure and customer satisfaction; meagre resources allocated to NEMC and ineffective cooperation among stakeholders. The study concludes and recommends that, unsatisfactory compliance that affects the renewable resources base from which the highly treasured tourism industry is dependent needs consideration. Therefore, there is a need to enforce compliance through regular environmental audits and monitoring. Also, awareness creation to developers coupled with strengthened institutional coordination will enhance compliance to ESMP and EMoP.
