Lake Nabigaga is a small lake situated in the Kyoga basin with no significant rivers flowing in it. It was intended that this lake would be the water source for a Cirtrus scheme established at Kiige in 1968/69. The total intended extent of the scheme was 400Ha. Unfortunately, the behaviour of the Lake has raised a question of the certainity of water source: Evaluation of the operation of the lake under simulated historical hydrometeorological condition is undertaken. Limited data are available for lake surface elevation, rainfall and pan evaporation values. But there are no data for stream flow, the land catchment of the lake, flow exchange between the lake and the Nile and seepage from and to the lake. Lake level record is 14 years long (1966-1982), while rainfall and pan evaporation data extend from 1966 to 1974 with missing data in 1969 and part of 1970. Ten-day data were considered the appropriate interval for the Lake operation simulation. In order to simulate the operation of the lake during the historical period, it was necessay to estimate the net input into the Lake from the natural water balance of the lake. Changes in lake storage as reflected by changes in lake elevation were used to represent the natural water balance. After statistical analysis of the lumped inputs, the rainfall, evaporation and the relative water level between the lake and the Nile to access the cause of water accumulation in the lake, it was found that the influence of the Nile is not so significant as to affect the operation of the lake. A two dimensional model was used to simulate the lake operation to assume optimal timing of irrigation for maximum yield. The project has been found capable of supplying almost all of the proposed water demands of the scheme.en_US
