A dissertation of ten surgical conditions

The dissertation consists of ten surgical cases studied by the author during years of training. It is divided into three parts. Part one consists of five cases of general surgery; Part two consists of three cases in urology and Part three of two cases in Orthopaedics and Traumatology. In each subject there is a detailed case report of one patient followed by a summary of the characteristic features of the remaining patients. Lastly a review of the relevant literature on the subject is presented. In part one 5 cases are discussed and these include: (a) Fourteen patients with traumatic rupture of the spleen who were admitted and treated in surgical Firm I Muhimbili Medical Centre between July 1986 and December 1987. (b) Twenty four empyema thoracic patients admitted and treated in the thoracic surgical unit, Muhimbili Medical Centre, between July 1986 and May 1987. (c) Thirty-eight patients with carcinoma of the oesophagus admitted in surgical Firm II Muhimbili Medical Centre from June 1987 to May 1988. (d) 25 patients with simple goitre in surgical Firm I and II at the Muhimbili Medical Centre admitted between July 1986 and May 1988. (e) Twenty five patients with sudden onset of irreducible inguinal hernia, treated in surgical Firm I, Muhimbili Medical Centre between July 1986 and June 1988. In Part two three cases are and these include: (a) Fourteen patients with carcinoma of the urinary bladder treated in the Department of Urology, Muhimbili Medical Centre between July 1986 and June 1988. (b) Eight patients with carcinoma of the prostate studied at Muhimbili Medical Centre between July 1986 and June 1988. (c) Seven patients with vesicle calculus treated at Muhimbili Medical Centre between June, 1986 and June 1988. In Part three two cases are discussed and these include: (a) Thirty one patients with fractures of the shafts of the femur managed in the Orthopaedics and Trauma Department, Muhimbili Medical Centre June and October, 1988. (b) Eleven patients treated for tuberculosis of the spine between August 1987 and September,1988.
