dc.description.abstract | Voltage control of a 132 kV bus at Kiyungi Substation in Kilimanjaro region has been studied in order to establish a means of eliminating problems of sustained low voltages at the bus. The study has been motivated by recorded events of prolonged low voltage magnitudes especially during peak hours. The study involved data collection from the SCADA-EMS system whereby the voltage profile of the 132 kV Kiyungi bus bar on hourly bases for three years were taken and also substation related information were taken. The data showed that, the voltage dropped up to 108 kV (18.18 %) below the nominal voltage (132 kV) which is not encouraged for the safe operation of the power system’s equipment and proper functioning of customer’s appliances. Based on collected data, a simulation model of Kiyungi bus as receiving end point and Hale bus as sending end point has been established. Matlab simulation software was used to analyze the derived model to see the extent of the problem and to validate the collected data of under voltage at the bus. Calculation of the compensation equipment size based on existing loads and connections at Kiyungi substation bus has been done to validate the existing voltage magnitude data and extent of voltage magnitude improvements. Study results and findings reveal that low voltage problem is existing at Kiyungi substation especially during peak hours and that there is compelling requirement to install compensation equipment. Respectively; Shunt Capacitor method of 34 MVAr is proposed as the best method to eradicate the problem and is recommended to be installed in parallel with the existing 132 kV Kiyungi bus. | en_US |
