Most universities in developing countries like Tanzania strive to offer theoretical knowledge in science and engineering courses however they encounter obstacles in providing related experimental facilities due to lack of adequate laboratory equipment. High cost of equipment is one of the limiting factors facing such universities. One of the solutions to this problem is online laboratories which support sharing of experimental facilities among universities. In this dissertation, online optic fiber experiments were developed for the University of Dar es Salaam. This dissertation contributes to the integration of Emona FOTEx board into the iLab Platform whereby two experiments were developed; Optic fiber communication system and Bi-directional Optic fiber. The experiments were implemented on the Emona board, a computer program (virtual instrument- VI) in Lab VIEW was created and finally the experiments were launched online using the iLab Shared Architecture as a framework for deployment of online laboratories. The system was tested to confirm the availability of the experiments online and if they work as desired. The system developed served the desired purpose, i.e. demonstrating optic filtering, WDM, losses and bi-directional communication. Switching between experiments required manual transfer of cables between ports hence it is recommended switching mechanisms to be implemented using the Analog and digital input/output channels on the NI ELVIS.en_US
